Artist’s statement: “I am primarily a landscape photographer. My attention is drawn to the intimate details of the landscape. I separate these subjects from their environment and create scenes that are based on memories, dreams, feelings and emotions. Labels are unimportant to me. I see lines and patterns, shadows and light, and accentuate these lines and patterns, making them the subject of the photograph.
Over the past few years I have incorporated references to encaustic painting and ancient Chinese and Japanese brush painting and woodblock art into my work. My intention is to create with the viewer a moment of pause and reflection; a moment to digest the image and find their own story in the art.
I journal daily. I write whatever is going through my mind at the time. Some of these thoughts find their way into my work. They can be the beginnings of an image, or the resolution to a problem I have as I am developing the work. In much the same way as my written journal, my art serves as a
visual journal. It allows me to give voice to my thoughts and the issues which occupy those thoughts. Often the message becomes clearer as I’m working on the image. It’s rare that I begin an image with the thought that I want to convey. The process is one of evolution, both of the content and the message that I want to share, as I edit the image.“
